Light on HomePod Mini Is Extremely Dim [Solved]

I am guessing you just bought a HomePod mini, but unfortunately, the light source on the top of the device is extremely dim. When you play music, you want the light to shine bright but it’s barely visible. And now you are wondering whether to return it to the seller or fix this issue yourself.

I saw a few people on the Apple support forums discuss this issue. The problem is you can’t turn it off with a button. HomePod mini— unlike the older version— does not come with physical controls.

Before you begin troubleshooting, make sure to turn on the lights in your room. The light sensor present in this device senses the intensity of the light in the room. It dims when it’s dark and glows when placed in a well-lit environment. There’s no way to adjust the brightness of this device, hence an attempt to do it manually will go in vain

What is HomePod mini’s light for?

The answer is quite simple. It’s there to indicate whether the smart speaker is connected to an iPhone or not. If it’s green, then it is connected, and if it’s white, then the HomePod mini is not connected.

Apple’s HomePod mini is a small device that connects to your iPhone, so you can use it to control music, send messages, and make calls from your phone. It also has a “Hey Siri” feature, which allows you to talk to the mini and ask questions or give commands.

Towards the top of the HomePod mini is a light ring, which lights up when you say “Hey Siri.” The ring lights up when you’re using the device for listening to music, sending messages, and making calls.

The light shows Siri what you’re saying so it can better understand your requests. If more than one person is speaking in the room, Siri can tell who’s speaking by looking at the light.

The light ring on the HomePod mini also flashes red when it needs attention. This usually happens when you’ve connected new speakers and haven’t set them up yet. You can complete an initial setup on your HomePod mini by following the instructions in the Apple Home app on your iPhone or iPad.

Best solution: Reset the HomePod mini to its factory settings

Resetting the HomePod mini is the best solution to “dim light”. If you two or more speakers connected together, make sure to ungroup the stereo pair before resetting your speaker. You want to reset the one with the fault.

There are three ways to do this:

1) Reset using the Home app

The Apple Home app is available for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Follow these steps to remove the smart speaker from your Home app:

  • Open the Home app on your device
  • Locate the option for HomePod mini. Press and hold for a second
  • A new page will open up. Scroll to the bottom and tap on “remove accessory”. Tap on remove.

2) Reset by pressing on top of the HomePod mini

You can reset your HomePod mini to its factory settings with the device itself. This option works for folks who are unable to remove the smart speaker from their phones. Follow these steps:

  • Unplug the power adapter from the device. Wait for a few seconds. Plug it back in.
  • Place your index finger on top of the device. Keep it pressed.
  • The white light will turn red. Keep the finger in the same position.
  • Siri will notify you that the device is about to reset. Lift your finger, once you hear this message loud and clear.

3) Reset with a Mac or PC

You can restore the smart speaker by connecting it to a Mac or a PC. You can connect the speaker to the machine with a USB-C cable. Here’s how you can achieve this:

  • Connect HomePod mini with your computer with the help of a USB-C cable
  • Open a Finder window or iTunes app on your computer
  • Locate HomePod in the left pane. Select the speaker you wish to reset
  • Click on Restore HomePod.

Check if the light sensor near the top of HomePod mini is covered by a finger or other objects

The HomePod mini has an ambient light sensor near the top. Make sure that the sensor is not covered by a finger or other objects. If the HomePod mini can sense your voice better when you remove the obstruction, simply move it to another location.

The light sensor detects the surrounding environment, including the color of walls, objects, and other factors so that it can optimize the sound to give listeners a superb experience. This flexible light sensor is designed to recognize the difference between a hand and a voice. It uses the surroundings to help you interact with the HomePod mini better.

Check your surroundings. The HomePod mini is designed to work optimally in a well-ventilated area. You might have placed the device in a damp room. Lack of ventilation may be the reason it’s not able to communicate with your phone or the surroundings. Hence, the light on top of it remains dim irrespective of the intensity of the light in the room.

Check if the HomePod mini is close to sources of light or brightness such as windows or lamps

If you place your HomePod close to a source of light or brightness such as windows or lamps, it can create an echo in the microphone which can be disturbing and make it difficult for your device to hear you properly.

To avoid this from happening, place your device away from sources of light and brightness. At Least a couple of meters away. But make sure the lights in the room are turned on.

Moreover, keep it away from large metal objects or appliances like a microwave oven. The light on the HomePod mini may go dim if there are multiple wireless devices present in the same room. This device is designed for personal use. Maybe you are using it in a cafe or a library. Just making sure!

What does an ambient light sensor do

An ambient light sensor is a component on many electronic devices that measures the amount of light in the room. These sensors are often used to automatically adjust the brightness of a screen or to adjust how long a device’s backlight stays on.

The ambient light sensor is usually located on top of a device. The ambient light sensor in the HomePod mini works in combination with a proximity sensor that can detect when a person is nearby and will turn off the display to save power. The ambient light sensor in the HomePod mini is primarily used for adjusting the brightness of the light.

This sensor is basically a tiny photodetector that measures the amount of ambient light hitting on the receiver end (which in this is the top portion). It helps control the brightness of the light, and it does it automatically so you don’t have to change the brightness at different times of the day.

How to tell if the ambient light sensor is faulty

The main goal of an ambient light sensor is to automatically adjust your HomePod mini’s brightness according to its surroundings. A faulty sensor would not know how bright or dim it needs to make the light. As a result, it decides to make the light as dim as possible to save battery life.

You can tell if the light on the HomePod mini is extremely dim is due to a bad ambient light sensor by testing it. Check the ambient light sensor under different lighting conditions. If there’s no change in brightness after you change the lighting conditions, then the ambient light sensor is probably bad.

Is it my fault that the light on the HomePod mini is extremely dim? Is my device damaged? Your device is perfectly fine if you can solve the problem with the techniques discussed above. Unless you have dropped the device onto a hard surface or spilled water on it, it is not your fault.

If nothing works, make sure to contact apple customer support. You can return the device as this is a manufacturing defect. Apply offers a one-year warranty on HomePod mini.
